BOSTON, MA -- A 103-year-old baseball card featuring a rookie Babe Ruth is rare enough.
But couple that with an ad on the back for an historic Grand Rapids department store and you’ve got a gem worth even more.
The card, a 1916 Babe Ruth with “Herpolsheimer Co., Boy’s Fashion Shop, Grand Rapids Mich.” on the back, is being sold at an online auction through Boston-based RR Auction.
Sports auction experts believe the card could bring $100,000 or more. The bidding was at more than $83,000 Wednesday, Nov. 20.
Herpolsheimer’s was a Grand Rapids department store with its roots going back to about 1870. The company opened a downtown store in 1949 that flourished.
The store was at the corner of Fulton Street and Division Avenue, where the Grand Rapids police station now sits. It was particularly well known for its “Santa Express” miniature train operating in the basement.
According to RR Auction, the card set with Babe Ruth sometimes was issued with various advertisements on the back, mostly featuring clothing stores. A newspaper ad from the time period indicated that Herpolsheimer’s distributed the cards 20 at a time to children over a 10-week period.
The Babe Ruth card has a crease, but otherwise is in good shape with a “bright and crisp” image.
It’s not the only Babe Ruth card with “Herpolsheimer’s” on the back. In fact, at least three other cards have been graded for quality and value in the past, according to RR Auction.
The auction, featuring several other historic baseball cards, comes to a close Thursday evening.
Herpolsheimer’s was one of two Grand Rapids department stores that inspired the “The Polar Express.” Though Herpolsheimer’s isn’t mentioned in the book, it’s named in the 2004 film.
The Herpolsheimer’s name disappeared in 1987 when it was sold to a company called Lazarus.
