Have you eaten at DiBella’s Subs? Your credit card data may have been stolen - syracuse.com

If you’ve eaten at DiBella’s Subs in the past two years, your credit card data may have been stolen.

The Democrat & Chronicle reports the Rochester-based restaurant chain announced on its website that it was notified in August 2018 by the FBI and credit card companies of a possible breach by cybercrime syndicate FIN7. The company said it took “several months” to determine the root of the malware attack due to the “sophistication... and the complexity of the attack."

Customer credit card information, including names, payment card numbers, expiration dates and CVV numbers, may have been compromised at 47 stores in six states. Upstate New York locations include Bridge Street in East Syracuse and Elmira Road in Ithaca, plus shops in Buffalo, Albany, Rochester.

As many as 305,000 customers may have been affected in Connecticut, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, New York and Pennsylvania between March 22, 2018, and December 28, 2018. DiBella’s said it also had at least one case of breaches between September 2017 and Dec. 29, 2018, at a Cranberry, Pennsylvania, location.

DiBella’s Old Fashioned Submarines, also known as simply DiBella’s sub shop, said it took immediate action to remove the malware and has been cooperating with cybersecurity experts and the FBI in their investigation.

So why wait so long to alert customers of the potential breach? The company said it was told by law enforcement to wait, so the disclosure would not compromise ongoing investigations.

DiBella’s also said it does not know for certain that all 305,000 customers were affected.

“Based on our investigation, we do not believe every card used during this window was at risk,” the company said. “Furthermore, many of the cardholders may have had cards replaced as a result of this activity or possibly because a card was used at another company or restaurant that was also a victim of the FIN7 attacks. However, we are identifying this conservative window out of an overabundance of caution to enable you to protect yourself.”

The Times Union reports customers who used a credit card or debit card at DiBella’s are urged to review their credit card or bank statements for any unauthorized charges. If you believe your card information is compromised, they recommend contacting your card issuer, canceling your card and obtaining a replacement.

DiBella’s also said it has taken measures to improve its security and reduce the likelihood of a similar breach in the future, the statement read.

“We apologize for any inconvenience or concern this incident may have caused,” the company said in a statement.
