White House report card: Trump survives impeachment week with 81% of voters saying 'meh' - Washington Examiner

Our White House Report Card finds President Trump surviving the first week of public impeachment hearings buoyed by a record-breaking stock market and polls showing up to 81% of voters saying that the House investigation won’t change their view of the president.

Democratic pollster John Zogby highlighted the division over the president and gave him a D- for the week. Conservative analyst Jed Babbin said the week was “meh” for the president despite all the turmoil and gave him a C+.

The Dow Jones hit 28,000 this week. That is scary, but it is the only good news I saw for Trump this week. The only other possible good news is that he is still in the White House.

Otherwise, the televised hearings on his impeachment launched, and Washington is riveted by the testimonies of some very credible present and former diplomats who gave witness to the president's attempted shakedown of the Ukrainian president.

Everywhere Marie Yovanovitch went turned bad. She started off in Somalia, how did that go? Then fast forward to Ukraine, where the new Ukrainian President spoke unfavorably about her in my second phone call with him. It is a U.S. President’s absolute right to appoint ambassadors.

We are not just seeing two competing parties in these hearings but actually two versions of reality and truth. Over 81% of U.S. voters say that the hearings will have no bearing on their view of Trump. So ironically, we have a spectacle playing out live on television, and most Americans don't really care about details either way.

And Trump lost a few more battles in the courts and still refuses to release his taxes.

Trump had a “meh” week despite his meetings with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and NATO General Secretary Jens Stoltenberg, court proceedings on his tax returns, an ISIS bride who wants to return to the United States, and impeachment hearings that went public for the first time.

The Trump-Erdogan meeting produced no decline in tensions between the two nations. Trump risibly said he was a “great fan” of Erdogan despite the facts. The Trump-Stoltenberg meeting passed essentially unnoticed.

Trump lost another round in his battle to keep his tax returns from Democratic hands, and that matter will eventually end up in the hands of the Supreme Court. An ISIS bride, wanting to return to the U.S. (where she grew up) was turned down by a federal court that ruled against her. She is the daughter of a diplomat from another nation, born here while her father was still serving another nation so, by law, she isn’t a citizen.

The economy is still soaring, the Democrats are still praying for a recession, and some are reportedly feeling “buyers’ remorse” over the House impeachment proceedings. All in all, a rather boring week.
