Union-Tribune columnist Nick Canepa grades the Chargers after their 39-10 loss to Minnesota on Sunday at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson:
Quarterbacks: F-
Continuing his worst season of ball protecting, Philip Rivers again did not play fifth-year-senior-smart in that sea of purple shirts and soon found himself deep in Carson crap. Going along OK until he threw a high-school sophomore pick (didn’t cost him), then lost a “Fumble Six” at the end of the half (part of four turnovers in the first 33 minutes, leading to 10 points). He intentionally grounded. Picked again, and again.
Running backs: F
Melvin “Soon To Be A Free Agent Paid In Butterfingers” Gordon fumbled it away on his own 11, leading to a FG, and then lost one on the first play of the second half (another FG) and got pulled. He lacks burst. Austin Ekeler still can catch.
Receivers: C
Mike Williams will go over the middle — and deep, and jump in the end zone. Keenan Allen made big catches — and fell in the end zone on what looked like a sure TD. Hunter Henry had a big catch, a strong hold, and fumbled one away (horrible call by all officials).

Offensive line: C
Not as bad as it appeared. Rivers’ three sacks (including the strip) were more of the coverage variety. LT Russell Okung went out with a groin injury, replaced by Trent Scott (who’s not as good).
Defensive line: C
The defense probably had no business holding the Vikes to four field goals in this mess. Zero pass rush early or late (no sacks, little pressure). Melvin Ingram missed a big tackle on the first drive, got dinged, then returned to intercept Kirk Cousins near intermission (which Rivers flipped to a negative). Joey Bosa was active, at times too active, and didn’t have a sack. Middle OK vs. the run.
Linebackers: C
Denzel Perryman, fresh from the doghouse, made a big tackle on the first play and later knocked Dalvin Cook out of the game with a TFL (which mattered only to Dalvin).

Secondary: C-
Whither ballhawks? Didn’t cover much early. Michael Davis got a PI in the end zone (didn’t turn his head), then broke up some passes, then held. Derwin James got beat for short opening TD, later stopped a drive. Desmond King, inactive plenty this year, officially was inactive. Rayshawn Jenkins got lost on a deep ball. Casey Hayward should be a Pro Bowler. Rarely hear his name.
Special teams: D-
Ty Long didn’t punt until the third quarter and had it blocked. Michael Badgley, who gives way to Long on kickoffs, had a 41-yard FG.
Coaching: F-
What did Anthony Lynn stress to his kids last week? Protecting the ball. They didn’t listen, leaving their keys in their cars with the windows down in a bad neighborhood. Can’t beat the Yuma High Criminals with seven turnovers and blocked punt. Right going for it fourth-and-14, but like everything else, it didn’t work.
Next opportunity (Raiders): F
For now, this won’t be the Silver and Black’s last home game vs. a division rival in Los Angeles.
