NEW YORK — Terence Crawford hopes 2020 is finally the year he lands fights with bigger-name opponents. In the meantime, he has to deal with a mandatory challenger.
Crawford will put his WBO welterweight title on the line Saturday night when he faces Egidijus Kavaliauskas at Madison Square Garden.

The switch-hitting phenom vows that his sole focus at the moment is on shutting down "Mean Machine" and nothing else, meaning any talks about a future bout against PBC fighters such as Errol Spence Jr., Manny Pacquiao, Keith Thurman or Shawn Porter will have to wait.
"I'm not focused on no other opponent besides the opponent that's in front of me," Crawford said during the final fight press conference earlier in the week. "My goal is to make sure I get the victory come this weekend, and (Kavaliauskas is) the only person I'm focused on now. Anyone else is talk. It goes in one ear and out the other. He's young, hungry and I'm not taking him lightly."
Kavaliauskas divulged that he has been preparing for Crawford's unique style since June.
"All the tactics, everything was about how Crawford fights, which stance (he'll use)," Kavaliauskas said about trying to train for Crawford's style. "Sparring, we had lots of different guys, southpaw, orthodox, guys in different stances. And the training camp, (we worked on) speed, power, sparring, technique and tactics, all in this five, six months.
"Going straight ahead to Crawford is not an option because he's too smart and he showed in his last fight that he's smart in the ring. So, yeah, we'll work on my combinations. We don't want to go very wild at him."
Whether that approach makes this an intriguing fight remains to be seen.
Crawford has noted that Kavaliauskas has never been dropped; perhaps he'll look to change that before turning the page to the New Year and marquee fights.
The co-feature, Richard Commey defending the IBF lightweight title against Teofimo Lopez Jr., will attempt to be the show-stealing fight of the night during this tripleheader.
